This year, I threw myself a birthday party. And, it was a raging success if I do say so myself! I went with a 1960s/Mad Men cocktail party theme, inviting everyone for Cocktails and Canapes, and encouraged everyone to dress in the theme if they wanted. We had a lot of last minute cancellations, but I think we ended up with around 14 couples, and every single person except one was in character – and the pearls and silk neckties and poofy skirts were amazing. Three girls even came wearing their grandmother’s furs. SO great.
We also kept the food in theme – fried spam, deviled eggs, pigs in the blanket, mini egg rolls, Jello jiggler cake, chex mix, etc. Surprisingly, the pigs in the blanket were the biggest hit. Spam was a close second.
The biggest hit was hiring a bartender. We have an awesome bar in the basement, and I made sure it was fully stocked. The bartender was slammed all night making Manhattans, Old Fashioned, Martinis, French 75s, Tom Collins, Whiskey Sours…so many fab old drinks. We crushed some serious bourbon and rye whiskey. It made hosting SO much more fun, because drinks are really important to me, and I loved that my guests could enjoy a fun cocktail and not have to try to make it themselves.
We also did little gift bags. Each one had a mini bottle of vodka and Virginia bourbon, a bottle opener, candy cigarettes, Advil (ha!), and rock candy. Goody bags are so fun at kid parties, I loved sending everyone off with a gift bag (and bottles of water) for the road.
I have the BEST friends. They really made it such an incredible night!
