Tyler doesn’t like being in pictures so I always look forward to Fall, where for one day a year he begrudgingly agrees to pose nicely for family portraits. I LOVE family pictures – our entire hallway is lined with shots from last year’s session – and I was looking forward to updating them since Guinevere has changed so much in the last year.
All pictures are by the incredible Jess Wright Photography – I can’t rave about her enough. As a mama of four, she has no expectations of how kids should pose for pictures – she takes a step back and lets us interact and then manages to grab perfect shots that really capture our family dynamic. I love that – we aren’t stressed about posing and smiling and angling – we just get to be.
Last year, I expected it to be warmer and it was freezing so we wore coats the whole time. This year, I expected it to be cooler and we sweated our butts off the whole time. Perhaps next year I’ll perfect this.
Guinevere’s outfit was easy once I saw this plaid shirt dress at H&M – I adore the flannel material and pattern.
I also thought it’d be cute if we all wore our boots – Guinevere’s darling bow-backed knee highs from Baby Gap, Tyler’s new Red Wings, and my Tory Burch riding boots.
Tyler’s outfit was easy – his closet is full of plaid shirts and sweaters so he perfectly matched Guinevere’s style. My outfit was impossible. I feel most comfortable in weird things like silky camo shorts and leather peplum tops, but I thought I should go for the casual Americana thing to match the family. I debated skirts and dresses and all sorts of things to go with my boots. I settled on jeans and a white blouse, and the outfit is very much not me.
I love the pictures – I love seeing my little family together. They’re technically and artistically beautiful. They are beyond my expectations as far as Jess’s skills are concerned. But I do wish I’d worked a little harder to find an outfit for me that I felt more comfortable in. The loose blouse is roomy, and while I’m sure no one could actually confuse me for being pregnant or a bit overweight, it certainly doesn’t do me any favors. Its also a bit different than what I would consider to be my personal style, so I just don’t think I look like me if that makes sense.
I’ll still be hanging them proudly on my walls – and I need to debate about which one will get blown up into a canvas print for our master bedroom – but I plan to get an early start next year on the whole outfits thing 😉
Several of these coming soon to a Christmas card near you 😉
Yes, soon – we’re only 74 days from Christmas. I know.
